Porn Hits Women’s Hindbrains First

Porn stimulates arousal in ALL women. Not convinced? So says research.

Watching explicit sex will automatically arouse a clitoris/vagina.  Like a reflex — it arouses the body automatically and without any effort or control.  Studies first saw this phenomenon in 1977 when researchers monitored the physical signs of women’s sexual arousal while they watched porn. They found that the watching porn registered first with the hindbrain and headed directly south to the pelvis, increasing blood flow and lubrication.  As it turns out, we are all pre-programmed to get aroused when we watch sexually explicit material — women included.   So why don’t we women know this already from experience? Men seem to know.

The plain truth is that men’s arousal is obvious, they get an erection and the erection gives them a cue that they are aroused leading them to feel more aroused. But women have their arousal-cue hidden. Lubrication and increased blood flow occurs mostly inside their vaginas leaving them without the positive feedback that they are aroused. In the short time that this reflex has worked it’s magic ‘down there’ the big bad logical forebrain has a chance to weigh in on the subject yelling “you shouldn’t be aroused by that!”, “porn hurts women”(courtesy of Catherine McKinnon and Andrea Dworkin),

“My body isn’t as perfect as hers is” and much, much more. The conscious brain is just trying to help, but all it ends up doing is killing our arousal. Not to mention the porn made today STILL plays out men’s fantasies, not women’s. Most porn made today STILL does not take a woman’s perspective, fears or turn-ons into consideration. But still, after all of those voices, the body is nonetheless aroused.

We at Juicy Logic think women should also get the benefits of porn. Let us all let porn arouse us when we our arousal is sluggish or weighed down by real life stress. Let us use it to understand what we like and what we don’t like, inspire us, teach our partners what we like and don’t like, open a dialog with our lovers, get off when we want to and expand our sexuality. Porn could be great. Especially if more women get involved in making it and watching what appeals to a woman’s sexuality. We love porn! We get a lot out of watching it.

AND we are frustrated with the quality and perspective that is available.
